This backlash was led by R. Fulk, who slowly gathered steam from and onwards.

While most scholars agree that the Beowulf manuscript, Cotton Vitellius A XV , is a product of the late tenth- or early eleventh-century, the antiquity of the poem itself remains a matter of heated debate. This text for the first time called into question the early seventh or eighth-century dating of Beowulf that had been received as fact for decades.

The potential chronological book-ends of such a period shape much of the debate throughout the book, and the evidence ultimately suggests a hard terminus ad quem sometime in the early ninth century AD. In his chapter on versification, Thomas E. Bredehoft mobilizes insular Anglo-Saxon and continental Germanic metrical evidence both to demonstrate the relative antiquity of Beowulf and to situate that antiquity sometime in the eighth century ad.

The Transmission of ‘Beowulf’

Although in the modern period Beowulf has been the subject of best-selling translations and blockbuster movies, our only source for this poem is a single medieval manuscript, written out around the year , and not treated well in the centuries since. These errors form the main subject of a recent book by Neidorf , The Transmission of Beowulf , which presents an important and thought-provoking reconsideration of this process of transmission.

On the basis of the various mistakes made by the scribes, Neidorf paints a portrait of intelligent and well-meaning late Anglo-Saxon scribes confronted by a bewildering manuscript exemplar produced in a very different cultural and linguistic context. Neidorf begins with a programmatic introduction, in which he lays out the scope, premises, and methodology that informs the rest of the study.

Examinations of the date of Beowulf have tremendous significance for Megan E. Hartman, Joseph Harris, Thomas D. Hill, Leonard Neidorf, Rafael J. Pascual.

Beowulf , like The Iliad and The Odyssey , is a foundational work of Western literature that originated in mysterious circumstances. In The Transmission of Beowulf , Leonard Neidorf addresses philological questions that are fundamental to the study of the poem. Is Beowulf the product of unitary or composite authorship? How substantially did scribes alter the text during its transmission, and how much time elapsed between composition and preservation?

He argues, on the basis of archaic features that pervade Beowulf and set it apart from other Old English poems, that the text preserved in the sole extant manuscript ca. These errors are interpreted in the central chapters of the book as valuable evidence for language history, cultural change, and scribal practice. The Beowulf manuscript thus emerges from his study as an indispensible witness to processes of linguistic and cultural change that took place in England between the eighth and eleventh centuries.

It is one of the most important works of Old English literature. The date of composition is a matter of contention among scholars; the only certain dating pertains to the manuscript, which was produced between and The story is set in Scandinavia in the 6th century. Beowulf , a hero of the Geats , comes to the aid of Hrothgar , the king of the Danes , whose mead hall in Heorot has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel’s mother attacks the hall and is then also defeated.

Fifty years later, Beowulf defeats a dragon , but is mortally wounded in the battle. After his death, his attendants cremate his body and erect a tower on a headland in his memory. The poem survives in a single copy in the manuscript known as the Nowell Codex. It has no title in the original manuscript, but has become known by the name of the story’s protagonist. The events in the poem take place over most of the sixth century, and feature no English characters.

Some suggest that Beowulf was first composed in the 7th century at Rendlesham in East Anglia , as the Sutton Hoo ship-burial shows close connections with Scandinavia, and the East Anglian royal dynasty, the Wuffingas , may have been descendants of the Geatish Wulfings. The poem blends fictional, legendary and historic elements.
