Pewter is a delightfully warm, friendly alloy. If champagne should always be drunk from a silver tankard, then beer should be drunk from a pewter one, ideally with a glass bottom,so you can see if any enemy comes through the door while you are drinking; We are talking about past days of course. The first English pewter is Romano-British and dates back as far as the year B.

Back when I first got involved in collecting, almost everyone I knew was searching for early pewter items; everything from charger plates to tankards and spoons. Interest is not quite so high today as it was 40 or so years ago, and pewter items are harder to come by, with most unique pieces having ended up in museums and famous collections. Like silver, pewter is a specialized field of collecting requiring years of training in how to recognize the genuine article and identify the many makers of pewter from countries other than America.
I learned a great deal about pewter from a dealer who operated a pewter shop in Manhattan for many years. She was a wonderful teacher and taught me how to distinguish one form of pewter from another. Everything imaginable could be found in her shop. There were porringers, extremely large plates, tankards, spoons, bowls and one-of-a-kind items one rarely sees for sale. I still have one of the earliest pewter spoons I purchased from her. It dates to the late 17th or early 18th century, displaying a rat tail motif on the rear of the bowl.
This feature can be found on the end handles of jugs of the same period.
